Server Platforms, Operating Systems (OS):
- NT
"IT managers worldwide are being confronted with the question,
should we go with Microsoft Windows NT Server or one of the UNIX
operating systems? Windows NT Server is increasing in popularity,
but is it increasing the productivity of your MIS operations?
Most important of all, though, for you as a manager is, are you
increasing the profits of your company when you choose a Microsoft
solution?"

- UNIX
"UNIX is not a single operating system; it refers to a family
of operating systems which includes AIX, BSDI, Digital UNIX, FreeBSD,
HP-UX, IRIX, Linux, NetBSD, OpenBSD, Pyramid, SCO, Solaris, SunOS,
just to name the more prominent ones."
From an article by John Kirch
- LINUX
"Linux, properly known as GNU/Linux, is a free, UNIX-like operating
system, developed originally for home PCs, but which now runs
on a variety of platforms including PowerPC, Macintosh, Amiga,
Atari, DEC Alpha, Sun Sparc, ARM, and many others. Linux aims
for POSIX compliancy to maintain maximum compatibility with other
UNIX-like systems. With millions of users worldwide, Linux is
probably the most popular UNIX-like OS in the world."

Hosting Features:
- Access
Microsoft® Access 97 for the Windows® 95 and Windows NT® operating
systems provides relational database power to give you the information
you need to make better decisions. It integrates data from spreadsheets
and other databases, and is the easy way to find answers, share
information over intranets and the Internet, and build faster
business solutions. Access 97 allows you to generate, analyze
and create reports without hours of work. It integrates ease of
use from the data entry point to printing in HTML.

- Anon ftp
Allows access to web server based files without a user name and
password. Addresses are typed into the location text field of
a browser window or through an ftp program (use ftp:// instead
of the usual http:// if using a browser). For browsers use the
File pull-down menu to high lite the option you wish to use (upload
file, etc.). With ftp programs use upload/download, get/put options.
Good for sending non-sensitive files between users, companies,
clients, etc.
- ASP / Active Server Pages
Active Server Pages is an open, compile-free application environment
in which you can combine HTML, scripts, and reusable ActiveX server
components to create dynamic and powerful Web-based business solutions.
Active Server Pages enables server side scripting for IIS with
native support for both VBScript and Jscript.

- CGI-BIN
(Common Gateway Interface) -- A set of rules that describe how
a Web Server communicates with another piece of software on the
same machine, and how the other piece of software (the CGI program)
talks to the web server. Any piece of software can be a CGI program
if it handles input and output according to the CGI standard.
Usually a CGI program is a small program that takes data from
a web server and does something with it, like putting the content
of a form into an e-mail message, or turning the data into a database
query.
You can often see that a CGI program is being used by seeing cgi-bin
in a URL, ( but not always).
- Cold Fusion
Cold Fusion is a database gateway application which sits next
to and enhances a computer's Web server software. Cold Fusion
is made by Allaire Corporation, based in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
- Dedicated Servers
Need more than just server space and a few emails? Leasing a dedicated
"box" may be the answer. It's like a personal computer in it's
speed rating (mhz) and storage (megs/gigs) and is good for large
web sites like corporate intranets, etc.
- FrontPage Extensions
Microsoft's Frontpage uses "webbots" and other programming doodads
to make web building easier and more powerful (at least, that's
the idea). For these to work properly or at all the server that
your Frontpage-made web site is hosted on MUST have these extensions
- Hit Stats
Seperate web page that uses charts and numbers to tell a web site
owner more about the traffic their site is generating. Can also
tell details about where viewers are coming from (search engine
or banner link?) and other useful info.
- MySQL
MySQL is a true multi-user, multi-threaded SQL database server.
SQL is the most popular database language in the world. MySQL
is a client/server implementation that consists of a server daemon
mysqld and many different client programs and libraries. The MySQL
database system is free.
The latest version of MySQL can be found at http://www.tcx.se
- Real Player Support
Almost any web server can allow for simple upload/download of
real audio and video files (ra.,ram). However, if you want to
have a radio or TV station on the web streaming media you need
to make sure your hooked to a server that uses Real Server software.
Cheap it ain't.
- Reseller programs
Some hosting companies will lease chunks of server space to web
developers or other web entrepreneurs who will in turn resell
it in smaller amounts to their clients. Good for developers who
want to offer hosting on a limited basis and can be good for their
clients who can get hosting with specialized hosting companies
with out having to buy gigs of space. Watch for the mark-up.
- Shopping Cart
A script of varying size and complexity used to calculate all
functions of the ordering process on web pages, from order, tax,
and shipping totals, to address and item number info.
- SSH
Ssh (Secure Shell) is a program to log into another computer over
a network, to execute commands in a remote machine, and to move
files from one machine to another. Basically, you can use ssh
instead of telnet and your session between your computer and the
remote machine is encrypted so mischevious people can't get your
password by running a sniffer on the wire.
- SSL / Secure Socket Layer
An environment for web browsers primarily, in which all communications
will be encrypted (coded) to ensure safe transactions. Notable
by warning dialogue box and locked key symbol in the bottom left
corner of the browser window.
- Telnet
Telnet is telecommunication connection and terminal emulation
computer application software that allows you to access a host,
assuming they have given you permission. Telnet provides a "window"
to the host so that you can login and communicate with the host.
While you are working in this "window" all computing takes place
at the host level.
- Web-based Control Panel
Gives hosting clients a password protected web page from which
they can administer the web page, adding e-mail accounts, check
bandwidth and space usage etc.
